Mason Johnson 40 months:

1.       The child has made progress in the following areas: Mason has made the most progress in his language development, vocabulary, social skills, and cognition. When Mason first started here we with your involvement placed him in speech therapy, and now his language and words are easily understood. He is almost ready to graduate out of speech therapy. He has been using bigger words such as important, reward, expecting.   Mason is also venturing into the Dramatic Play Center daily. He is Practicing problem solving as well.

2.       Mason really enjoys the Block Center, as well as activities that require sorting and dividing things into groups. (Sorting colored marbles into their appropriate destination in the egg carton.)

3.       Mason gets very excited outside. He acts as if he has been set free.  He is attentive when he is in the block center. He pays great detail to the position of the blocks. He is very focused in the block center.

4.       Allowing him to redirect his energy in racing outside or doing laps on the bicycle trail on the playground.

5.       The family could help Mason with his sharing. The easiest way to do this is to display acts of sharing openly as examples.

Journal #11

I am a Kinesthetic Learner. I learn best through hands on interactions and activities. For the visual parents I would post newsletters and posters. For the auditory parents I would explain the important events to them or have their child’s teacher remind them of the events. For the kinesthetic learners I would have the children create something pertaining to the upcoming events that the parents can take home with them.

Health Alert!
The death toll from the flu in Oklahoma alone has grown to a heartbreaking 17!! Majority of the victims were young children. Please get your family immunized and protected from this. It can be prevented with immunizations and good hand washing techniques.

The Care Bear Bus will be coming and administering Flu shots for free to SunnySide's children and family on April 18th 2012. If you would like to sign up for you and your child's free flu shot speak to and sign up with the Director, or your child's teacher. Remember to bring immunization records and identification.

New Policy!!!

Due to a recent outbreak of allergic reactions from food, I ask that you do not bring your child to the center with outside food. If your child has a medical disability or issue that cause for a special diet, please make arrangements with the director personally and prior to the food being brought into the center. The children are the main focus and concern so I appreciate your consideration and cooperation.

                                                                                                     Thank You,
                                                                                                     Erin Hubbard

Journal # 7

Ariel was a 28 year old mother of two. she didn't have time to dress up or decently.

I think dressing for success is all about the persons confidence. If she or he feels confident in professional clothing then they will be successful. However, the clothing must be appropriate for the work setting and environment.

Journal # 6

1.       The confidentiality code was violated with the mother by the teacher posting their phone number on the board without her permission. The teacher also spoke with other teacher outside the center pertaining to the mother and her family.
2.        The code of confidentiality was broken with the child when the teacher labeled Eric a bitter and told the other children’s parents as well as the teachers.
3.       If they felt his disability would render the teachers from supervising the other children to her required ability they should have had a discussion with the family prior to enrolling Eric.
4.       Family, and head teacher
5.       Yes, just explaining to the children that diversity is a part of life and that we can still be friends with someone despite their disabilities.
6.       Allowing him to tour the center
Meet his classmates
His mom can read him a book while at the center
7.       The conversation was unnecessary and unprofessional. It also show her true colors and who she really is as a person
8.       I believe it would be still unnecessary. Her personal opinion is not really needed.
9.       No, there is no rectifying the teachers actions but, the director could have a conversation with the mother with the teacher present to apologize.
10.   No, the teacher was very unprofessional and I sure wouldn’t want my child in that center.
11.   Reasons for not moving Eric would be the effect it would all have on his behavior. He is obviously reacting to his home life by biting so, moving him again would only add to his existing issues.

Staff Meeting: Fundraiser
We are having a recruitment fair on August 4th!!
·         This fundraiser is mandatory four at least four hours by each staff member
·         There will be a sign in sheet to reserve the time you want
·         Each teacher has to bring a dish and referral at least one family
·         There will be food, games, and prizes
·         The main focus is to welcome in new families!!!
·         And FUN FUN FUN!!!!
Staff meetings are important because it keeps everyone on the same page. It allows teachers to ask any questions they may have; it also gives the staff the opportunity to voice their opinion on any issues they may have. The director is also able to address any problems they have noticed from the staff.

Journal #4

When someone doesn’t acknowledge me it initially makes me a little upset. I feel like it doesn’t take much out of a person to make eye contact and say hello. When someone doesn’t make eye contact with me it gives me the impression that they don’t care enough to do so or, that they are hiding something and in the early care field that is taken very seriously because there are children involved and honesty is a must. It also upsets me to get the cold shoulder from someone. I feel as adults people should be able to express their feelings and emotions in a healthy civilized manner. There are underlying issues for someone to give the other the cold shoulder or no eye contact, and by doing so nothing is resolved. To only greet someone with complaints shows no consideration for them as a human being. It is not polite or professional. Early care is all about professionalism, integrity, and compassion for the children especially but, the families, staff and community as well.
We have the opportunity to help mold and model these young children into respectable, educated individuals. We as teachers expect our children to have and enact good manners yet, we don’t when it comes to coworkers or parents (A little hypocritical if I do say so myself). Even if the children aren’t present to see the situation play out they too can feel the tension or discomfort between those involved. The children are the main focus and top priority, so all the other staff on staff, or parent on staff “drama” is irrelevant because there is no benefit from it, for the children.

Journal #3

Page 18 scenario 1
I would first start by thanking the family for their effort in providing a special treat for the whole class. I would then explain the center’s policy regarding allergic reactions and peanuts. I would also explain that although none of the children in that specific classroom are allergic to peanuts, there can be a child in another room that could come in contact with a child who has peanut residue on their hands. I would then suggest that they bring a different kind or birthday treat such as cupcakes, snow cones, or ice cream.
Page 19 scenario 2
First I would explain the policy that is set for that specific shift, and then I would direct that she speak with her co-workers in attempts to find someone who would be flexible with her regarding that Friday morning shift.
Page 22 scenario 3
After I composed myself I would approach my co-worker privately. I would let her know that I was aware that she was claiming my work for her own and that I felt it was wrong. I would then ask for it back and offer to show her the steps I took to come up with the lesson plan.
Page 23 scenario 4
In this scenario I would allow the father to rant because he has every right to do so. I would apologize for what he saw as poor supervision and I would also let him know that he also has the right to take the situation to the director. I would explain to the daughter the process of the incident reports so that she will know to inform me whenever there has been an incident. I would then reassure the father that I will pay close attention to his daughter’s safety.

Journal #2

The people I frequently interact with are my parents and family, children, mentors, instructors, classmates, and friends.

I think the conversation was detailed and informative. It suggests that the staff was understanding and considerate to the concern of the parent. The communication between staff and parent was very effective, and there was an opportunity for the parent to provide feedback about whether she agreed with the suggestions of the staff. I wouldn't add or take anything away from the conversation.

I visulize my child care center as a stepping stone for young children before attending school. It will be a place where children will learn through experinces, books, as well as play. My center will be affordable with reasonable rates to help low income families, young or single mothers, and foster parents. To identify my center we would utilize the open door policy to ease the anxiety of parents with children in child care. The strengths of my center would be the quality care the children would be receiving as well as the structure and preparement for school. There is always room for improvement in any business and mine would probably be communication between staff and parents or advertisment.

Introduction

My name is Erin Hubbard, and I currently do not work. I am a full time student but, I have worked in child care centers in the past. I am in the child care field because I love helping children learn new things, as well as learning from them. Making a positive impact on the life of a child is a very rewarding feeling.
